Location

Astoria Hotel is at Avenida de Mayo 916, in Monserrat, on the first avenue of Buenos Aires: opened in 1894, inspired by the boulevards of Paris and declared a National Historic Site. Café Tortoni is a hundred metres away, 9 de Julio one block and Plaza de Mayo about eight minutes on foot.

Getting there

Arriving via Ezeiza, the Tienda León bus drops you at the Pellegrini terminal, next to the Obelisk, in about an hour; from there the hotel is ten minutes on foot or a short taxi ride. There are also official taxis and the Uber, Cabify and DiDi apps: by car it is about forty minutes without traffic.

Arriving via Aeroparque, the same Tienda León takes half an hour and bus 8 goes down to Plaza de Mayo. Anyone arriving at Retiro can take subway Line C to Avenida de Mayo station, two minutes from the hotel; the closest station is Piedras on Line A, one minute away, and the 9 de Julio Metrobus runs a hundred metres off. Subway and buses are paid with the SUBE card, sold at stations and kiosks.

What to see

The essentials of the historic centre are a few blocks away: Plaza de Mayo with the Casa Rosada, which offers free guided tours at weekends with booking, the Cabildo, the Cathedral and the Manzana de las Luces. On the same avenue stands the Palacio Barolo, with its lookout; the Obelisk and the Teatro Colón, with daily guided tours, lie to the north, and San Telmo, with its Sunday fair in Plaza Dorrego, to the south.

The climate is temperate: hot, humid summers and mild winters with no frost. The Microcentro empties at night and at weekends, so it is wise to come back by taxi or ride app when it is late. Foreign cards are widely accepted at a favourable exchange rate.
